Why is it called Fort Canning?
The hill was converted into a fort in 1860 and renamed Fort Canning in honour of Viscount Charles John Canning, Governor-General and first Vicerory of India. Around 1920s–1930s, the hill was transformed into an artillery fort with barracks, officers’ quarters, old gunpowder magazine and a hospital.

How do you get to spiral staircase at Fort Canning Park?
The closest entrance would be from Dhoby Ghaut MRT. Simply head towards the entry just at the start of the tunnel at Fort Canning Link. There is a tunnel that one can look out for to enter from the bottom of the spiral staircase of the Fort Canning Tree Tunnel.

Who lived at Fort Canning?
People of the kingdom of Singapura farmed and lived on the foothills between today’s Fort Canning Park and Singapore River. Singapura’s naval force of Orang Laut was based at today’s Labrador Park. In 1389, a large naval force either Siamese or Javanese attacked Singapura and razed it to the ground.
Who built Fort Canning?
Built on an excavated plateau, the fort was completed in 1861 by 400 Chinese coolies. It was named Fort Canning, after Viscount Charles John Canning, Governor-General and First Viceroy of India (1856–1862). Seven 68-pounders were positioned at the fort to face the sea by May 1859.
