On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first contact lenses that can act like sunglasses. A special additive automatically darkens the lenses when exposed to bright light, while they become clear again in normal or dark lighting conditions.

Do tinted contacts help with light sensitivity?
Yes. Some tinted contact lenses can reduce glare or light sensitivity by reducing the amount of light entering the eye. Some contact lenses can be provided with an ultraviolet (UV) filter. However, these lenses are not a replacement for ultraviolet (UV) filtering sunglasses.
